Background Physical properties of substrates considered<\/span> appropriate for plant growth at planting may change over<\/span> time in containers as a result of several processes. Changes<\/span> include air space reduction, shrinkage of the substrate,<\/span> organic matter decomposition, and physical breakdown of<\/span> particles. The objective of this research was to evaluate the<\/span> physical properties of date palm waste as culture media and<\/span> its effect on number and yield of tomato fruit.<\/span> Results The experiment was conducted as factorial in a<\/span> completely randomized block design with 9 treatments and<\/span> 3 replications. Treatments included three sizes (S<\/span>1 <\/span>=\\0.5,<\/span> S<\/span>2 <\/span>= 0.5\u20131, and S<\/span>3 <\/span>= 1\u20132 cm) and three composting times<\/span> (C<\/span>1 <\/span>= 0, C<\/span>2 <\/span>= 3, and C<\/span>3 <\/span>= 6 months) of date palm waste.<\/span> Statistical analysis showed that the values of bulk density<\/span> (BD) and water holding capacity (WHC) were significantly<\/span> increased at the end of cultivation from culture media<\/span> without plant in comparison to before and after planting<\/span> (p\\0.05). Amounts of F<\/span>t <\/span>(total porosity) in culture media<\/span> without plant were significantly higher than those in culture<\/span> media before planting and with plant (p\\0.05). Also<\/span> during the experiment, an apparent shift in physical properties<\/span> was recorded.<\/span> Conclusion The overall results of this research indicated<\/span> that composting process changed the physical properties of<\/span> the media before planting.
